Jolly Phonics Teacher's Guide

Step 2

Building Fluency

Step Overview

In Step 2, children strengthen their reading and writing through structured weekly units. This stage consolidates skills from Step 1 while introducing alternative spellings for vowel sounds, more tricky words and capital letter formation. Pupils also begin working with the alphabet in colour-coded sections and are supported to write model sentences, moving towards greater fluency and independence.

Focus areas include:
  • Alternative vowel spellings and introduction of spelling rules

  • Handwriting practice including capital letters and joined writing

  • Extension of tricky word knowledge

  • Model sentence writing and early free writing

  • Use of decodable readers to build confidence and fluency
