Jolly Phonics Teacher's Guide

Step 3

Advancing Skills

Step 3 Overview

Step 3 extends children’s phonics knowledge and develops their reading comprehension. Pupils continue practising alternative spellings, tricky words and more complex sentence structures. They also refine alphabet knowledge, practise digraphs and strengthen their independent writing. A stronger emphasis is placed on comprehension, vocabulary and fluency, ensuring pupils are ready to read widely and write more confidently.

Focus areas include:
  • Revising and extending alternative spellings (e.g. /air/, soft c and g)

  • Learning the final set of tricky words

  • Alphabet recitation and capital letter formation

  • Writing sentences from dictation and developing free writing

  • Strong focus on comprehension activities in Words and Sentences lessons

  • Decodable readers at higher levels (Blue and Purple)
